Napa State Hospital opened November 15, 1875, on 192 acres of Rancho Tulocay land — California's remedy for the overcrowded Stockton Asylum, its Gothic 'Castle' the grandest structure the valley had ever produced. The Castle was demolished after WWII; a eugenics-era sterilization program and roughly 4,000 patient burials on the grounds quietly filled out the ledger. A museum planned for a 2024 opening within the still-active hospital displays bone saws, wrist restraints, and pharmacy bottles: a tidy exhibit on the gap between 'therapeutic institution' and what that phrase actually covered.
