Come nightfall on Mitchell Flat, something wakes up out there in the dark between Marfa and the Chinati Mountains. Witnesses — going back well over a century — describe orbs of light that drift, split, vanish, and reappear, as though they know they're being watched. Some swear they're the restless dead: Apache warriors, lost Spanish conquistadors still hunting gold in the high desert. Stand at the viewing area long enough and the lights will do something that headlights simply don't — and that's when the folklore starts to feel less like a campfire story and more like a warning.

The first recorded sighting dates to 1883, when cowhand Robert Reed Ellison spotted flickering lights near Paisano Pass and assumed Apache campfires — a full sixteen years before automobiles reached Texas, which the car-headlights theory has never quite lived down. The Texas Department of Transportation eventually built an official roadside viewing area on Highway 90, because when a phenomenon outlasts every explanation thrown at it for 140 years, you might as well give it a parking lot. Scientists lean toward a mirage-like atmospheric bending of distant light; the desert, so far, has not confirmed.
