They say a student fell from the west staircase — not slipped, not stumbled, but fell — and that South Middle School has never quite let it go. Come midnight, former students and locals swear a white figure drifts the western stairwell, retracing the path that ended in tragedy. Stand at the base long enough after dark and that pale shape, hovering somewhere above you, begins to move. No explanation has ever stuck. Whatever it is, it does not appear to be in any hurry to leave.

South Middle School is a public campus serving grades 6 through 8 within the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District — one of the largest school districts by area in Texas, spanning 945 square miles of the Rio Grande Valley. Home to the Rebcats, the school sits in a community that, by every official measure, is defined by education and tight-knit Rio Grande Valley pride. The record, as the district would tell it, is one of classrooms and test scores. The legend, as the Valley would tell it, is considerably shorter — and considerably harder to grade.
