Drive Old Stage Road after dark and the hills feel closer than they should. Local legend — passed down through Salinas families for generations — tells of a woman, late 1800s or early 1900s, who accepted a ride from a stranger and never arrived anywhere. Her apparition is said to walk the road still, carrying her own head. That's not the only one: somewhere along the route stands a tree, and those who've flashed their headlights at it after dark swear they watched a body drop — then drove right through it.

Old Stage Road is no piece of local color — it appears on the 1873 California Geological Survey map as the primary route linking the Salinas Valley to San Juan Bautista, tracing the footsteps of the 1776 De Anza Expedition and the old El Camino Real. Once the workhorse of Central Coast travel, it was quietly bypassed by modernity and left to the Gabilan Hills. By the 1980s it had become Salinas teenagers' go-to cruising road. The county decommissioned it; the legends did not get the memo.
