Something shifts on Old Fort Road before you ever reach the building. Locals have long sworn the old campus carries a heaviness — shadows in empty windows, circles of animal bones that appear and vanish before anyone can return to find them. An old tree near the road holds its own legend: park beneath it and, people swear, something pushes your car uphill. Oregon Institute of Technology was born here in 1947, when the state repurposed a deactivated WWII Marine Corps hospital — a place built for men ravaged by tropical disease — into classrooms for returning veterans. The school outgrew the site and moved on; the old campus on Old Fort Road did not move on with it. What the records call a routine relocation, folklore recast as something less tidy: an abandonment, a hill left to sit with its wartime grief still baked into the concrete.
