Out in the black chop of Lynn Canal, Eldred Rock sits like something the sea refused to swallow. The Clara Nevada went down just off this island in February 1898 — fire, gold, and as many as 75 souls lost to water so cold it barely needed to try. Then in 1910, two of the keepers rowed off the rock toward shore and simply never came back. Head keeper Nils Adamson was left alone with the light, and by all accounts, the weight of those disappearances never left him. Those who pass by after dark say the silence out there feels occupied.

Built in 1905 and lit June 1, 1906, Eldred Rock is the oldest original lighthouse standing in Alaska — and the record shows it earned that distinction the hard way. The Gold Rush steamship Clara Nevada wrecked and burned here in 1898, killing up to 75 people and sinking some 850 pounds of unrecovered gold. A lighthouse felt like the least the government could do. Manned until 1973 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, it's now being slowly restored by volunteers — the canal, as ever, not cooperating.
