Drive Buffalo Ridge Road after dark and the woods seem to press a little closer than they should. Locals swear a spectral white van materializes in your rearview mirror and won't let go — and that's before you start thinking about what's out there in the trees. Deep in Mitchell Memorial Forest, where a crumbling ruin once stood, people report ghosts drifting across the road, a small dog with glowing green eyes watching from the tree line, and a cold feeling that the darkness here has been used for something it shouldn't have been.

The infamous 'crematorium' is, on paper, nothing of the sort — it was the skeleton of an unfinished observatory, begun in the 1930s using materials salvaged from Cincinnati's Chamber of Commerce building, itself destroyed in a 1911 fire that killed six. Funding collapsed, construction stopped, and the concrete shell was left to the woods. By the time the park service quietly buried the ruins in the 2010s, the story had long since metastasized: satanic rituals, bodies in a bottomless lake, Charles Manson's Ohio years. A half-built stargazer's folly — and somehow it became all of that.
