People don't just walk Benefit Street after dark — they report being followed by it. Witnesses claim a phantom horse-drawn carriage rolls silently over cobblestones no wheels should cross, vanishing before the next gas lamp. An old woman is said to watch from an attic window of a house neighbors insist has sat vacant for years. Some swear the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe still paces the block near his fiancée's home, coat collar up — restless in death as in life. And underneath it all, the ground itself may be uneasy: this entire hill was Providence's original burial ground.
Historical context
Laid out around 1756, Benefit Street earned its name when colonists widened the old hillside footpath for the "benefit of the town." What they didn't advertise: roughly 120 years' worth of Providence's dead, buried in backyard plots on that same hill, were exhumed and relocated — not always carefully — to make way for the road. By the 19th century it had become one of the finest Georgian and Federal-era addresses in New England. Edgar Allan Poe visited repeatedly in 1848–49, courting poet Sarah Helen Whitman at No. 88; she ultimately ended their engagement. He was dead within months.
